First off, I believe that in classroom management there needs to be a mixture of both assertive and cooperative discipline. If I had to choose though, I would lean more towards cooperative discipline. I want students to achieve that sense of belonging and for them to trust me as well as their classmates. Many students have a good home life but some do not, so I want them to know they can consider the classroom their home.
The model I created with my play-doh reflected the love I want students to feel in my classroom. I made three stick figures holding hands, which represented the students in the classroom, and a heart above them. If they know they are loved and respected, they will have more of a willingness to learn and do their best. Before they can learn, their basic needs such as security and a sense of belonging need to be met.
There was a connection between my model and my peer's words. They understood the message I was trying to portray. Here is a list of some of the words/phrases they wrote about my model: togetherness, community, unity, support, collaboration, working together. cooperation, friendship, and love. I enjoyed this activity because I found words to describe my model that I hadn't even thought about.
The implications this has on my future practice as I go into my classroom this week is that I will do what I can to make sure my students feel like they belong in the classroom. There are times where some of the students do not get along and to combat this I could do morning meet activities with them to build that trust and sense of community in the classroom. The more they work together, the more they will see the advantages of teamwork and collaboration.
