Weekly Readings:

1. The Red Shoe (Webb, 2000)

This article was about the experience a kindergartener had in school and how it opened her eyes to how some people may think that "different" is "nasty". The little girl went to school one day and the teacher called on her to show the other kids how to tie a show. This was a red shoe and the little girl was about to tie it with her mouth when the teacher yelled "nasty girl". She felt horrible after being called that and later on we realize that she tied them with her mouth because her mother, who doesn't have hands, taught her that way. The moral of the story was to be open-minded and to find out why people do the things they do before you judge them.

2. Why is that child so rude? (Templeton, 2013)

This article was about all of the actions we might encounter from students that we might think of as "bad" behavior. A couple of these would be not doing homework, falling asleep in class, and calling out. We do not know the home lives of the students and the reasons they do these things. The article talked about many scenarios such as having to take care of siblings and not having time for homework, waiting for parents to get home and spend time with them meaning less time for sleep, and calling out because at home that is they only way you can express yourself and be heard.

Reflection:

In every classroom there is usually atleast one student that does not behave like the others. Perhaps they are always calling out or maybe they fail to follow directions and talk back. Instead of labeling the child it is important to take a step back and think about why they might act like this. In the reading The Red Shoe, we see how something that is of norm in a household can be frowned down on in other places. The teacher did not stop to think why the student tried tieing the shoe with her mouth and immediately called her a "nasty girl". This week I came across a couple of students that might be labeled when in a classroom. I saw one snatch a book from another student and another that kept distracting others no matter how many times he was told not to. This reading was relatable and helped me to not judge the students right away but to think about their home life and the reasons they might behave the way they do.
