This semester I decided to choose another focus student and a completely different wondering. My last wondering was focused on comprehension, and now I am tackling another area. This student in particular struggles with fluency. My wondering is, "How can I help my focus student achieve a higher fluency score through activities and strategies?"

My focus student will be referred to as Jake. I conducted an informal interview with him to find out more about his life. He likes to read Baby Mouse books and nofiction books about many animals such as sharks, moose, butterflies, and turtles. His favorite food is ribs and his favorite place to read is his room. He lives with his mom, dad, and brother who is four years old. His favorite music is country and his favorite sports are baseball, basketball, and fishing. Jake's favorite subject in school is math, his favorite color is blue, and his favorite animal is a hog. I found this unique as many children, and people in general, would choose dogs, cats, horses, dolphins, and animals such as these as their favorite.

I have gathered some data on my focus student. This date includes a recent running record and Spelling Inventory, and an I-Station report. The running record was conducted by his teacher and the Spelling Inventory by me. It would be great to see his words correct per minute(WCPM) increase by the end of the semester and for his spelling to improve. The I-Station report gives me statistics on his overall reading, text fluency, letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, alphabetic decoding, and comprehension. Aside from this, I collected socio-emotional data as well. I asked him to draw a picture of whatever he wanted. He drew a picture of his family, his house, and a lake where he fishes with this dad.
