After having watched the video, I learned a couple of things about setting the tone in your classroom on the first day. First off, students will take advantage of new teachers because they do not know their tone yet. They will try to get away with what they can unless you show them that they must respect you. In the beginning of the video the principal walks in and clears his throat and the students immediately get quiet. The principal has set his tone in the classroom. The new teacher, on the other hand, received no respect when he walked in. So, he started to set his tone. He asked a question and then a student gave an answer that made fun of his question. Then, the teacher asked him if he had any more jokes to say. He told the student that he was surprised he did not and that back in the day, he was the one who was a shenanigan in the classroom. He said there was no way they would be better than him at it and starts to walk around taking magazines and nintendos. He even grabs a note that a girl was passing and read it out loud, embarassing her. By doing and saying everything he said, he set the tone in the classroom. The students started to respect him and listen to him. They knew he meant business and were ready to learn.
